Anthony Hewitt & Friends

1 June @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Anthony Hewitt
Anthony Hewitt rounds-up top talent from across the globe for this much-loved, traditional format of chamber works for piano and strings.

The opening concert of this year’s Ulverston International Music Festival immediately sets the tone of the festival with two great British chamber works at the heart of the programme, written only a few years apart at the turn of the 20th century. Bridge was made famous by his pupil Benjamin Britten, who gave the quartet a glowing review: “Sonorous yet lucid, with clear lines, graceful to listen to and play….Brahms happily tempered with Faure”. Brahms’ influence is also clear in Vaughan Williams Piano Quintet (which uses the same combination of instruments as Schubert’s Trout, performed in the 2021 festival). Rich textures are in abundance and highly emotive melodies are characteristic of the composer, but an ever present narrative sees plenty of shifts to lighter moods, with pastoral interludes evoking English landscapes and country life.

Dvorak’s F minor Piano Trio is ‘sandwiched’ in-between, but only in the sense of its position in the programme as it is a substantial work of over forty minutes. More serious than its famous cousin – the Dumky Trio – it is yet more profound and captivating for its touching, melancholic themes, dramatic episodes and lively rhythms.

Vaughan Williams’ music is being championed around the UK for the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth, and forms part of A Lakeland Journey – a Cumbria-wide celebration of his music curated by Lake District Summer Music.

Programme

Frank Bridge Fantasy Piano Quartet, H.94

Antonin Dvořák Piano Trio in F minor

Ralph Vaughan Williams Piano Quintet

UIMF disclaimer: Artists or programme can be subject to change, and where a headline performer with top billing cancels, we will endeavour to find a like-for-like replacement. Refunds will only be offered in the event of the concert itself being cancelled.
