Swarthmoor Hall Celebrates Quaker Founder’s 400th Birthday

Four hundred years after the birth of George Fox, an early founder of Quakerism, Quakers at Swarthmoor Hall, Ulverston are joining others across the world in celebrating his life with a week of free events, starting on Tuesday 16th July.

George Fox first visited Swarthmoor Hall in 1652 as he travelled across England. He stayed for long periods at the Hall and it became a place where early Quakers could meet, organise and plan preaching missions. Margaret Fell, who lived at the Hall with her husband and family, also became a leader in the early Quaker movement. The Hall was always open to travelling Quakers and became a place of worship for the local community.

To commemorate this special Cumbrian connection and mark the 400th anniversary of Fox’s birth, Swarthmoor Hall is inviting everyone to join them in a series of talks and family activities throughout the week. This is also a chance to celebrate the Hall being open again to visitors for the first time since 2020.

The week begins with a Quaker communities day and then moves into a free programme of events including a series of talks throughout the week on different Quaker themes. On Thursday 18th Wordsworth Grasmere are running a special workshop ‘Rucksack of Rhymes’, aimed at families with pre-school children, at 11am and 1pm. On Thursday evening, everyone is invited to join a Quaker meeting for worship at 5.30pm for all in the Great Hall, just as George Fox and Margaret Fell would have done.

The week culminates in a tree planting ceremony on the morning of Saturday 20th July, which all are invited to watch. Anyone celebrating as part of Ulverston Pride is warmly welcome to bring along a picnic to the hay meadow at Swarthmoor Hall and enjoy the day.

The Hall, built around 1600, will be open each day following recent building conservation work and the beautiful gardens with a variety of styles within different areas, are free to explore.

General Manager of Swarthmoor Hall, John Moffat, comments “We’re really looking forward to welcoming people back into the hall and gardens after being closed for so long. Our recently completed building restoration project and the special George Fox anniversary is the perfect chance to show off Swarthmoor to more people across Cumbria and further afield.” He continues, “I hope lots of local people and visitors alike will join us throughout the week and experience the peace and history of this inclusive place for themselves.”

Born to a weaver and his wife in a small Leicestershire village in July 1624, George Fox toured Britain and travelled overseas to Barbados and North America, to spread the word. Since his visit in 1652, Quakers at Swarthmoor Hall and around the world have followed this example.

Quakers in Britain today work for peace, climate and social justice. Quaker communities create spaces for people of all faiths and none to explore their beliefs in quiet stillness. Following the example of George Fox and early Friends, Quakers continue to live and work by testimonies to peace, simplicity, truth, integrity and equality.

The Hall and gardens will be open 16th-20th July, 10am-4pm, free of charge, as will the café, offering a range of hot and cold drinks and cakes. There is plenty of parking on site and Ulverston train station is a 15-minute walk away.
