High Rigg – A Mountain in Miniature: Official Lake District Guided Walk
20 September @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm
Start Point: Legburthwaite United Utilities Car Park, Thirlmere, off the B5322
Length: 9km (5.5miles) with 400m (1,312ft) of ascent
Time: 4.5 hours (approx)
A moderate grade walk that begins with a steep climb from the car park, to the summit of High Rigg (357m), one of the lower Wainwright fells.
The summit of High Rigg provides a grandstand view of the surrounding fells, including Blencathra, Skiddaw, and Helvellyn. A taste of the higher fells without the effort.
From the summit, the route continues steeply downhill to the delightful St John’s in the Vale Church, before following the bridleway along the eastern side of the fell, eventually, leading back to the start of the walk.
Paths are generally good but there are some steep ascents and descents along the route, particularly at the start, which is very steep in places. There is also a narrow path, towards the end of the walk, with a 20 metre vertical drop, which could be a potential problem for anyone suffering from vertigo.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
