Jamal Aliyev

29 October, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Enjoy the romanticism of Schumann and Chopin and the modernism of Shostakovich in a lunchtime recital from this up-and-coming young cellist.

Winner of the prestigious Young Concert Artist Trust, Azerbaijan-born cellist Jamal Aliyev studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School with Thomas Carroll and is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the finest cellists of his generation. He performed at the BBC Proms in 2017 and most recently Elgar’s much-loved Cello Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

A programme of two halves, the romanticism of Schumann and Chopin is balanced by the modernism of Shostakovich’s remarkable cello sonata which – in the composer’s own words – searches for a clear, simple and expressive language. This piece hits you head on with its direct emotional content and its use of simple and popular tunes, as well as the highly theatrical.

A short note on safety

Your safety and comfort continues to be our top priority. Event capacities will be limited to maintain space in the auditorium, while all Coro staff and volunteers will continue to wear face coverings. Although no longer mandatory, we encourage all visitors to wear face coverings when indoors, keep a safe distance from others, use hand sanitisers and wash hands regularly, and check in with the NHS Test and Trace app if able to do so.
