Romans and Tall Trees – Official Lake District Guided Walk

19 September @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

A National Park Volunteer-led short walk including the remains of the Roman fort of Galava and the Champion Tree Trail in Skelghyll Woods.

Start point: Waterhead LDNPA car park, Ambleside

Length: 4km (2.5miles) with 125m (410ft) of ascent

Time: 2hours (approx.)

An Easy+ grade walk that begins with a walk through Borrans Park with glorious views down Lake Windermere, moves on to see the remains of the Roman Fort of Galava originally built around AD79 to protect vital trade routes through Cumbria and then into Skelghyll Woods where the Champion Tree Trail contains some of the tallest trees in England including a Grand Fir that is 58m high.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that will be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather. There is a steep climb in the middle of the walk and there is a kissing gates on the route.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather. Weather permitting, we will be stopping for a short break on route so please bring refreshments if you wish.

Your confirmation email will include full details – please read it carefully.
