Ulverston Parish Church Heritage Open Day
18 September @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Discover the skills of the Victorian artisan!
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing together over 2,000 local people and organisations, and thousands of volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history. This year, Ulverston Parish Church is heading back in time to visit 1866, the conclusion of the church’s most extensive renovation, in a fun, family friendly event.
Ulverston Parish Church has held a special place in the heart of the ancient market town of Ulverston for more than 900 years. The current building is a result of several changes and restorations and not much of the original building remains.
For one day only, immersed in Ulverston’s prosperous Victorian past, take time to listen to illustrated talks by heritage craftspeople, with an opportunity to get hands on!
Rector Alan Bing explains that “This promises to be an exciting, informative day with a chance for everyone to get involved, or simply watch the fun and enjoy some delicious refreshments.”
Come and visit the interactive displays including a chance to try some virtual bellringing, watch a stonemason at work and try it yourself, assemble stained glass, or try your hand at illumination and more! Young explorers can follow the children’s discovery trail, learn how to tie knots or tackle a variety of craft activities especially for them. Don’t forget to soak up the atmosphere by taking the opportunity to do some dressing up in Victorian costumes to fit all the family,
Talks will last 30 minutes, delivered by experts in stained glass, church stonemasonry, illuminated lettering, local ships and shipbuilders and traditional lime mortar. Displays, demonstrations, activities and refreshments will be available throughout the day. This is a free event and no booking is required.
