SUMMARY:Art & Soul Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a whole year since our art group came together\, and we would love to celebrate with you by opening our doors and showing you what we have achieved. \nWe meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) 10am to 12pm\, at the village hall in Lindal. Our members range from beginners to dabblers and doodlers. We are not tutor led\, but there is always help and support at hand if needed. There’s always new topics to explore\, and new ideas to try out! \nIt’s all very nice and relaxed – just a few local people\, sharing a creative space\, with lots of laughs and making new friends along the way! \nWe invite you to pop in to take a look at some of the artwork we’ve created. Grab a cuppa\, enjoy a slice of cake\, and have a relaxed chat with members of our group about what we do\, and why we do it. \nOur doors are always open to new members\, so if you’ve been thinking about picking up a sketchbook\, pencil\, or paints\, come and see if our group is right for you. \nWe are very excited about our first exhibition\, and we hope that you enjoy looking at our art as much as we have enjoyed creating it.

SUMMARY:Somme 110
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday July 2nd\, a small group of local historians and members of the Ulverston – Albert Twinning Association will commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. They will stage a free exhibition of artefacts and other items associated with W.W.1. The town of Albert was the railhead and distribution point for the British Forces. \nForty-two Ulverston soldiers never returned home from that battle\, including George Bell\, aged 17 years\, of Kennedy Street\, Ulverston. \nOn the day of the exhibition\, a one-third size home-made model of a “Vickers Gunbus” bi-plane\, approximately eight feet long\, will be displayed outside the Coro. The “Gunbus” did sterling service over the battlefield by chasing off the German planes. \nCommemorative illustrated booklets\, containing details of the forty-two Ulverston soldiers\, will be available at £3 each on the day (cash only please). There will be something for everybody – local historians\, the military minded\, and the curious passer-by\, at the Coro on Thursday July 2nd\, from 9.30am until 3.30pm.

SUMMARY:Voyage East
DESCRIPTION:Film screening at 7:30pm 19th June at Sir John Barrow School \nSir John Barrow Primary School in Ulverston is hosting a free screening of Voyage East\, retracing the journey a young John Barrow took through Vietnam and China in 1793. He travelled to the Far East as part of Britain’s first trade embassy. He learned Chinese and studied daily life at the Imperial Palace. \nThe film show is complemented by other exhibitions in the town. The town center mural by Gill Barron depicts key moments in Sir John Barrow’s life\, while the monument on Hoad Hill is open regularly and features the names of explorers Sir John Barrow sent on breathtaking missions to the polar regions. \nThe Cottage Museum is hosting Faces of Xinjiang\, a exhibition by Ulverston filmmaker Steve Wharton. He was a teacher in western China in 2011 and documented his travels along the famous Silk Road. It is open on Fridays 10-2 and Sundays 1-5. \nIn 2025\, Steve retraced John Barrow’s journey through Vietnam and eastern China. His documentary Voyage East vividly brings Barrow’s account to life whilst also providing a window on modern China. \n“It’s exciting to know I have stood in the same places as John Barrow did\, thousands of miles from home and separated by over two centuries. It’s fulfilling to bring the film highlighting his achievements back to our hometown to inspire others to be curious about his life and interests. I really hope this can be the start of regular celebrations to honour the Ulverston lad who became the father of modern polar exploration and founder of the Royal Geographic Society.” \nYou can find out more about John Barrow’s journey with Steve Wharton’s film and photographs at the THIS WAY TO CHINA exhibition in the Sir John Barrow Cottage Museum\, Ulverston. \nFree tickets for the screening at Sir John Barrow School at 7.30pm on Friday 19th June can be booked online via the tickets link below.
