UK Emergency Alert
The UK Emergency Alerts system is being tested at 3pm on Sunday 7th September 2025. The test alert will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and compatible tablets across the UK. This follows the first successful national test in April 2023.
You may get alerts about any type of life threatening emergency, such as:
- wildfires
- severe flooding
- extreme storms
- unexploded ordnance
- nuclear incident
Your mobile phone or tablet may make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent, vibrate, or read out the alert. The sound and vibration will last for about 10 seconds. An alert will include a phone number or a link to the GOV.UK website for more information.
You’ll get alerts based on your current location – not where you live or work. You do not need to turn on location services to receive alerts.
Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it be needed in an emergency. The test is not intended to alert you to real danger and you will not need to take any further action.
You can opt out of emergency alerts, including the national test, but most people are advised to keep them switched on. For example, victims of domestic abuse with a concealed phone may find it appropriate to turn off alerts, to avoid an abuser discovering a secret phone.
